Greetings Foodtopia fans and taco aficionados! It seems like these days everywhere you turn a new taco shop is popping up here in Asheville. Sometimes it can be hard to decide which establishment is the best choice to satisfy that taco craving! That’s why this week we’ve decided to focus on one of our all-time favorite Asheville taco shops, the tried and true, White Duck Taco.
White duck Taco Shop opened up their first location in the River Arts District in 2011 and has been known as one of Asheville’s best restaurants ever since. The name White Duck Taco originates from a nickname the Chef earned when she frequently got excited and talked too much to the kitchen staff. They called her “La Pata Blanca” which means White Duck. That chef is co-owner Laura Reuss, who works hard alongside fellow owner Ben Mixson to bring our Foodtopia community creative and often internationally inspired taco flavors!
White Duck Taco is a wonderful example of what can happen when a foodie town like Asheville so fully supports it’s local businesses. Because White Duck Taco was able set a solid foundation here a few years back and develop a community of supporters, they’ve been able to expand their taco empire to now include 7 restaurants! Taco lovers may enjoy White Duck Taco shop in Johnson City, Charleston, Columbia, 3 different locations in Asheville and (soon) Greenville!!
Of course there’s more to the story of the success of White Duck Taco than their expanding locations. Their tacos are known for being wildly creative and crafted with the use of delicious local and seasonal items. One of our favorites on the menu is the Bangkok Shrimp Taco; Fried shrimp in a sesame glaze, with curry aioli and house-made pickles. Yum! The menu at White Duck Taco changes often, but here is an example of some exciting options you might find on your visit. (Word to the wise; if the watermelon sangria is available- do it!!):
