Eating Asheville Spotlight: Get Some Sovereign Remedies

by Eating Asheville

Sovereign Remedies
Sovereign Remedies offers one of the most inviting spaces in all of Asheville.

Did you know that Sovereign Remedies, the local watering hole that is close to every Ashevillian’s heart, has officially been voted (once again) #1 cocktails in town AND #1 neighborhood bar?? And while The MountainXpress is certainly a solid point of reference, there are some things that need no list or poll to tell us how outstanding they are.

Plants and books make up the Sovereign Remedies decor.

Since opening in  2014, Sovereign Remedies has been tantalizing guests with artistically crafted cocktails and farm to table fare. There is a big push for craft cocktails in Asheville right now, and Sovereign Remedies takes this responsibility a few steps further. Owner Charlie Hodge created the establishment with the idea of “farm to glass” in mind. By working closely with Patchwork Urban Farms to grow many of their own fruits, vegetables and herbs, as well as sourcing from the next door Herbiary, this local favorite is able to produce drinks that are equally as fresh as they are tasty. In fact, many of the cocktails on the menu focus on the medicinal properties of the ingredients. The Root Daiquiri is a great example: the drink features an infusion from the roots of Dandelion, Burdock, and Sarsaparilla blended together with some rum and fresh lime juice to create a refreshing drink that makes both your taste buds and your tummy happy. (Always a perfect end to an afternoon of eating on our food tours, by the way!)

Cocktails were initially the main focus of the establishment, and now the food menu at Sovereign makes quite the buzz around town as well. The meatball sub, made in house using locally sourced meat, has been a local favorite for years. And now (drum roll please…) we have been beyond thrilled to see chef Steven Goff making a guest appearance and working his magic in the Sovereign Remedies kitchen for a few months!!!

Chef Steven Goff.

Steven Goff is a bit of a local legend ever since opening King James Public House. Goff is known for making creative dishes utilizing “nose to tail” butchery and ultimate farm-to-table ingredients. Although disputes with investors meant that King James wouldn’t last, Goff’s reputation certainly has, and everyone around town is pumped to try more of his creations.

Sovereign Remedies is open every day of the year and features a killer brunch menu on the weekends as well. We highly recommend checking out one of their weekly special events. Monday brings you “Meatball Mondays”, a special that will run through the first week of September where you can score the famous meatball sub for just 6 bucks with a purchase of a beverage! (Nom.) We’re also excited to check out September’s Indian dinner, featuring Farmer Sunil Patel of Patchwork Urban Farms on September 6th. More info and tickets for that event here.

And of course, you can check out Sovereign Remedies, along with many other local favorites, on our 1:00 High Roller Food Tours on Saturdays!!

Cheers Asheville!!
