Foodtopians love a good food war! Whether it be a burger battle, war of the food trucks or a wing competition- we are always ecstatic when Asheville’s best chefs get together to flex their creative culinary muscles. And we especially love it when some of our favorite downtown restaurants snag winning titles! There is no question that Mojo Kitchen and Lounge dominates at the wing game- their wing night is a local favorite and they consistently place annually at the Asheville Wing War. This year, we’re excited to see them take home the People’s Choice for best specialty wing!
The Asheville Wing War is a production of All American Food Fights and has become one of the area’s most notable and exciting food events. Hosted annually, the 2018 contest took place this past Saturday and included wing tastings, local brews and live music! 15 restaurants brought their best wings to the table- allowing locals and visitors alike to not only be the judge, but find new Asheville favorites along the way.
This year Mojo Kitchen served up a “Birds Eye Buffalo” for the traditional style wing, and snagged the People’s Choice award with their specialty wing; a version tossed in a ramp-parmesan truffle butter. Chef Aj Gregson is a big fan of the ramp, a local favorite that can only be wildly foraged in this area for just a few weeks. He creates a powder by dehydrating local ramps, and uses that concoction to make creative recipes such as this year’s winner and the 1st place winner of 2016- a ramp and sumac rub with tzatziki sauce.
If you didn’t get a chance to attend the 2018 wing war never fear- Mojo’s specialty wing was such a hit that they are now introducing it to their daily menu! And don’t forget you’ll have the opportunity to visit Mojo Kitchen and many other of Asheville’s best restaurants on our daily walking food tours! Ramp season is just around the corner and is one of our favorite times to be on an Asheville food tour- so be sure to snag your spot soon!
