Greetings Foodtopia fans! One of our favorite parts of any food tour we do is having the opportunity to showcase our personal favorite spots in downtown Asheville. We especially love bringing hungry food tour guests into the local favorite Mojo Kitchen and Lounge because we feel like it gives them a true taste of Asheville flavor while offering insight into one of our most unique downtown establishments.
The Chef behind Mojo Kitchen and Lounge is A.J. Gregson. A.J. studied at Johnson and Wales university, and brings this fine-dining culinary background to his fusion of deep southern food with influences from his Miami routes. A.J. teamed up with his wife, Autumn Pittman, a few years ago and the duo have been bringing Asheville an array amazing and innovative cuisine ever since.
Mojo is so much more than their brick and mortar downtown… they also have a mobile kitchen which can be found at popular local festivals like LEAF, and a food truck that won last year’s food truck showdown! In addition, Mojo does several pop-up dinners a year where Chef A.J. collaborates with local farms and breweries for various styles of delicious pairing dinners.
We are excited to see that Asheville’s hardest working couple is now stretching their talent to a new style and location with Webo’s BBQ in East Asheville. Below is an excerpt from Citizen Times on the new venture. (The full article may be viewed here.):
“In a bit of good news for East Asheville, A.J. Gregson and Autumn Pittman will soon bring new life to a local barbecue restaurant.
The 7-year-old Webo’s BBQ, in the River Ridge Market Place, was transferred to Gregson and Pittman on Monday, and it reopened Tuesday under the same name.
Locals will notice few changes initially, with a rebranding to Black Bear Barbecue not fully realized until late fall or early winter.
Though Webo’s has a devoted following, Gregson said last week he plans to bring in more fans by adding some chef-driven sides and specials, catering and extending the restaurant’s hours to serve lunch and dinner. More vegetarian-friendly fare is also already on the menu, with options continuing to grow…
…Gregson, a classically trained chef, plans to tinker in the kitchen, creating house-made sausages, pickles and other specials to scratch his creative itch. “A few things to make A.J. happy, and not just smoking meat all the time,” he explained.”
Although there is much to love about Mojo Kitchen, we are particularly smitten with the creative flavor pairings and innovative food combinations that A.J. comes up with. Because of this, we are very excited to see that he will also be playing around in the kitchen at Webo’s; as these experiments are always result in something amazing.
In addition to checking out Mojo Kitchen, their award-wining food truck, their popular mobile festival site or Webo’s BBQ- another great way to try Mojo’s cuisine is to join us for one of our daily walking food tours. We are honored to be able to showcase this amazing place several times a week, along with many other of Asheville’s best restaurants!
